Whisper Numbers: Tomorrowland opens for business

Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been one of the biggest at the box office. However, no established franchise planted a tentpole this year, leaving Disney as the biggest stakeholder with the sci-fi actioner Tomorrowland [1952]. Taking its title from the Disneyland theme park area, the PG-rated film has been shrouded in mystery. Open Road has dropped the redband trailer for the comedy Dope [DOPE].  Boyz n the Hood meets Go as a trio of high schoolers cross paths with a drug dealer in South Central Los Angeles.  Dope will open wide on June 19th.

Warner Bros. has uncovered the full-length trailer for the found footage horror film The Gallows [GALOW]. 20 years after a tragic school play, a group of students try to honor the anniversary of the student's death only to stir up his ghostly spirit.   The Gallows opens in theaters on July 10.

New trailer for Shaun the Sheep

Lionsgate has released the U.S. trailer for the stop-motion animated Shaun the Sheep [SHEEP] on Apple.  Originally spun-off from Wallace & Gromit into his own TV series, Shaun the Sheep leads in his own feature film from Aardman Animations.  When a mix-up sends the Farmer and the flock to the Big City, it's up to Shaun to lead everyone back home.  Shaun the Sheep lands stateside on August 7th.

First trailer for Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

Fox has unleashed the teaser trailer for the dystopian sci-fi sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials [MAZE2].  Dylan O’Brien [DOBRI] stars as the leader of the Gladers who escaped the maze in the first film.  They slowly uncover the truth about the experiments run by a mysterious organization known as WCKD, and escape to the desolate outside world which has been scorched by the sun.  Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials arrives in theaters on September 18th.

Sony has uploaded the full-length trailer for the sci-fi comedy Pixels [PIXEL] set in a world where aliens have sent real life video games including  PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, and Space Invaders to attack earth.   Now it's up to arcade champions  Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), Will Cooper (Kevin James), Ludlow Lamonsoff (Josh Gad), and Eddie “The Fire Blaster” Plant (Peter Dinklage) to save the world. Warner Bros. has unveiled the full-length trailer for the fantasy Pan [PAN1]. The revisionist origin of the characters created by J.M. Barrie follows an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland where he is destined to to become Peter Pan.  Originally set for release this summer, Pan will now reach theaters until October 9th.

Universal has debuted the teaser trailer for the biographical drama Steve Jobs [SJOBS].  After going through years of development hell played out in the Hollywood press, Aaron Sorkin's adaptation of the biography by Walter Isaacson finally comes to fruitition with Danny Boyle [DBOYL] directing Michael Fassbender [MFASS] as the legendary co-founder of Apple. Box Score: Pitch Perfect 2 blasts Mad Max

Grossing more in its opening weekend than the first film in its entire theatrical run, Pitch Perfect 2 [PTCP2] hit a high note beyond all expectations with an estimated $70.3 million to top the weekend box office.  Girlpower was on display as the audience was 75% female and 62% under the age of 25.

Mad Max: Fury Road [MMAX4] revved $44.4 million to debut in second place.  Coming 30 years after the last Md Max, the sequel attracted acrowd that was 70% male and 54% percent over 35.
