Paramount is designating Chris Pine [CPINE] as their franchise player. The trades are reporting that the young actor will once again boldy go where other men had gone before and play Jack Ryan in a film that reboots the franchise based on the novels by Tom Clancy. Alec Baldwin originated the role in 1990's The Hunt for Red October, before Harrison Ford took over for two films. Ben Affleck last played the role in 2002's The Sum of All Fears in a previous attempt to restart the series. Already in the Captain's chair for the new Star Trek, Pine is now in the driver's seat of another Paramount franchise. Since Ryan is a CIA Anaylst who uses his brains more often than his brawn, the previous films have lacked the cohesive thread that hold together the Bond or Bourne franchises. Perhaps that's why Paramount is basing the new film [REDRB] on an original script by Hossein Amini, rather than adapt from another Clancy novel.
