THE DOCTOR IS IN
Traders respond to last week's fan rant on "Cool."
Last week we invited a Trader to submit a fan rant. His topic: Hollywood Cool is dead. We had some controversial responses to this rant and so in this edition of The Doc is IN, we'll take a look at these responses and try to answer the question once and for all: Is there any cool left in Hollywood today?
HSXGoddess: In the past, there was a general definition of cool. Everyone knew the Rat Pack was cool. Nowadays cool seems to be somewhat relative. The youngsters think the cast of the O.C. is cool. Some of us think cool requires age and experience, being comfortable in your own skin in a way no one under the age of 30 can possibly be. But is there one actor/sports star/celeb out there who embodies cool like the Rat Pack did? Let's see what our traders have to say.
Our first trader had a mini rant of his own on the definition of cool:
jliron: That rant started out ok but he messed it up at the end. Snoop Dogg (SDOGG) does car commercials and is cool, but he is not any cooler than Denzel (DWASH). And how can he say Denzel is not cool? How out of date is the word cool anyway? Having the brains to put more into your movies than just showing up and reading lines in front of the camera and earning more money for it is COOL, because money is COOL. Dressing and acting to be the envy of every teenager is not cool when you are thirty—such as the Backstreet Boys and countless others that fade away. Having staying power is cool and you don't get that impressing kids with your COOLNESS.
HSXGoddess: I suppose it depends on your definition of cool and your age, but to me, you can’t even begin to be cool until you are over 30. Coolness takes age and experience to achieve. Andre Agassi comes to mind. He was a rebel with a cause in his teens and 20s. He was the wild haired tennis champion and Canon spokesperson. But he was not cool. He was wild and spontaneous and maybe a bit dangerous. Now, at 35, Andre is cool. He’s a master of his sport. He’s done amazing things for underprivileged children in his (and my) hometown of Las Vegas. And the image he presents to the media is of one unflappable, intelligent, worldly, swanky dude. The Andre of 2005 could easily hang with the original Rat Pack. Andre in the 80s and early 90s? More likely to be hanging with Sean Penn (SPENN) circa his beating up the paparazzi days.
The rest of the Traders who responded are searching for someone to call cool.
NME525: I don’t understand that rant at all. How can he think there is no one cool in Hollywood today? Matt Damon (MDAMO) is cool, and a Red Sox fan! Benjamin MacKenzie from the OC is cool. Josh Lucas (JLUCA) is cool. In fact, actors today are cooler than guys from the past.
HSXGoddess: (taking a deep breath.) Well first off. Matt. Damon. Is. Not. Cool. He’s definitely cooler than his sidekick Ben Affleck (BAFFL). But cool? No. He’s a bit too aw-shucks goofy to be cool. He does not have that certain sophistication and je ne sais quoi that is required for coolification.
Benjamin MacKenzie? Just No. First off, you have to have more than one facial expression to be cool. Second off, well I don't even think we need a second reason.
Josh Lucas (JLUCA), well, I’d love to give it to him, cause quite frankly the boy makes my knees weak. But he’s too boy next door-high school quarterback to be defined cool. But my guess NME525, is that you are quite young and I stick to my hypothesis that cool requires experience.
JHizzleinthaHouse: I can see the point the Fan Rant was making last week, but I disagree. Cool is not gone, it's just different. The 21st Century definition of cool is vastly different than the icons of the 50s, 60s and 70s the rant talked about. Nowadays I look towards actors like Viggo Mortensen (VMORT) and see coolness personified. Bill Murray (BMURR) has been cool for many many years. Stripes? Lost in Translation? I rest my case.
HSXGoddess: Mmmm Viggo Mortensen. Yeah I have to agree with that one. Hidalgo. Aragorn. History of Violence (HISTV) Oh Yeah, baby. Bill Murray, sure Stripes and Lost in Translation would lead you to believe coolness, but I present you Exhibit A: Scrooged. And Exhibit B: his fashion sense, or lack thereof. Murray is cool at times, but not all the time.
DarthZim1: Its not that cool is missing from Hollywood today, its just that we’re living in less swanky times. One could make an argument that Vince Vaughn (VVAUG) and Jon Favreau (JFARV) embodied the Rat Pack kind of cool in Swingers. And George Clooney (GCLOO), every woman wants him and every man wants to be him.
HSXGoddess: Swingers and Ocean's 11 are the closest things we have in modern cinema to a Rat Pack worthy film.
BlondeAmbition: I’ve got to agree with the fan rant saying Tom Cruise (TCRUI) is not cool. He’s creepy. But what about Matthew McConaughey (MMCCO)?
HSXGoddess: I agree that McConaughey is cool. He's redneck cool. But he does exude that sense of being completely comfortable in his own skin that is a requirement for cool. Ok we can keep him on the "one to watch" cool list.
MachoCamacho: One man. All cool. Sean Connery (SCONN).
HSXGoddess: Yes. So true. Every fiber of his being exudes cool. And he gets cooler the older he gets.
Well there you go folks. Sure everyone has their idea of what and who is cool. I think Viggo is cool. You may think Adam Brody (ADBRO) is. I think most of us can agree that George Clooney (GCLOO) is cool. But Connery? He is the cool master. Cool is not dead. It's just Shaken (not stirred).
