No one has EVER bought a video game for the story. It can be a bonus, but it is NEVER the deciding factor.

The story can be a hook, but a video game lives and dies by its gameplay. Honestly, the COVER of a video game is more important to sales than any actual story.

V: David O. Russell leaves 'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune'   medusa on May 26, 13:01

I think that's good news for fans! {nm}   Antibody on May 26, 13:14

His fans or the game's fans? Because this would have been the first time a real auteur took a shot at a video game film.   tawdryhepburn on May 26, 13:19

An auteur who sounded like he had never even played the game before. {nm}   CS on May 26, 13:20

Game's fans. His ideas had nothing to do with the actual game. {nm}   Antibody on May 26, 13:22

And this is a problem because...?   tawdryhepburn on May 26, 15:33

Because if you bastardize the film beyond reconition, you will lose the built in fanbase. {nm}   Antibody on May 26, 15:37

Because Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Of Human Bondage, The Iron Giant, Frankenstein and countless other book-to-films all sucked, right?   tawdryhepburn on May 26, 17:04

Yes, there are probably many book adaptations that sucked as that succeeded, so what. {nm}   Antibody on May 26, 17:24

Those were all book adaptations that were NOTHING like the novel. Hell, Of Human Bondage is litterally just one chapter of the book.   tawdryhepburn on May 26, 17:31

Was there a fanbase for that? The videogame movies that've suceeded are those that its fans considered respectful   Antibody on May 26, 17:53

Resident Evil is NOTHING like the games. And I didn't say that SMB was good. I said it was one of the best video game adaptations.   tawdryhepburn on May 26, 18:49

But the Uncharted games are more cinematically inclined than most games, whose popularlity stemmed in large part from characters and story.   Paul2k on May 26, 15:38

No one has EVER bought a video game for the story. It can be a bonus, but it is NEVER the deciding factor.    tawdryhepburn on May 26, 17:07

*correction* A video game has never been SUCCESSFUL because of the story. They live and die by gameplay. {nm}   tawdryhepburn on May 26, 17:08

I agree, gameply absolutely trumps story/character in determining a successful (critical and commercial) game. But, story/character can aid    Paul2k on May 26, 17:19

Eh, fair enough. But Uncharted could never turn a profit by appealing to the game's fans.   tawdryhepburn on May 26, 17:30

I wonder if Mark Wahlberg will also leave the project. Alot of fans wanted to see Nathan Fillion. {nm}   Nightfury82 on May 26, 13:33
