Chronicle (2012, B+) Surprisingly moving, thoughtful, even Nietzschean take on the superhero theme. It finds depth & veracity in directness.
Trishna (2011, C+) Winterbottom's Indian retelling of Tess reduces it to a colorful but simple caste-crossing love story, lacking in nuance.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011, C+) The incoherent, incomprehensible plot (loudly) stitches together visually masterful setpieces.
Tess (1979, A-): Polanski's classy class-crossing romance pits love against economics, rapture against stature, passion against melancholy.
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011, C+): A quirky teen & storybook adults. This 9/11 story doesn't ring true & is too slick to affect.
We Bought a Zoo (2011, C+): Crowe tinkers with his usual recipe (less bitter, more sweet) & cooks up a predictable, unambitious family film.
War Horse (2011, C+): At times virtuose, mostly silly and sentimental. Spielberg's WWI Europe looks like Gone With the Wind in the Shire.
