I think it did. BUT
I believe that Ledger's death absolutely increased interest in TDK and caused significantly more people to go see it than had gone to see BB. More than would have gone to see TDK if Ledger had not died.
The reason I believe this is relatively straightforward. Batman Begins was a very good movie. Yet Dark Knight did 2 1/2 times as much. TDK was a great movie, but not that much better than BB.
However, it does not follow that, lacking Ledger, The Dark Knight Rises will fall off. That TDK was so excellent perfectly capitalized on the added interest, and has led to people continuing to have interest in the franchise. They came to see Ledger. They left wanting to see what Nolan would do next. It turned Nolan himself into a draw.
