I was able to walk up and get a ticket for the 3:40 this afternoon, in 2D.
Snacks? No, We'd just finished up a late Italian lunch at Maggiano's (wow that was good).
Trailers? I saw most of the BFG trailer. Decent enough.
Short? I saw the Pixar short, Pippen. As usual, the short film before a Pixar feature is a visual stunner. No different here. Also as usual, a little heart tugger. In a word; charming.
Finding Dory: I don't think it's anywhere near the original; however, the second half is full of emotional beats and you'll be hitching your breath in no time. The voice actors are superb. I must say, Ed O'Neill steals the picture, and then when he's not around, Idris Elba is an absolute crack up in this. And about Ellen. It was pure genius, casting her in that original. There's something about Ellen, she's just perfect in this role. She was born for it, it was made for her, all that. She's pure bliss here.
It really is a sweet film, with such a well supported moral, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if some of the soulless posers sitting there actually felt something twinge for a second inside, before going back to their self absorptions.
Just kidding. The audience totally loved this picture. They gave it a huge round of applause at the end, and most of them stayed for the scroll. Andrew Stanton pulled it off. For Nemo fans, this is a mostly satisfactory afterward to that original masterpiece.
This is the second time this year I've gone to a Disney film, wondering how I'd feel. The first was Jungle Book, and I felt that film succeeded on its own terms without ever dirtying up my long felt emotions regarding the animated original. And now this time, and Pixar once again took care of the business side of the house, and even made sure that the film lover in me went home happy.
Quite a lovely afternoon. And now, it's a Criterion Saturday night. Something about a BALLOOON MEIN HERR?? A cuckoo clock? I hear Zithers, gotta go.
