This film seems to be the pick to come out of Sundance and be a major, major player this fall. I see it's set up to open Thanksgiving weekend and roll out as the potential accolades start piling up.
I've seen several film bloggers already championing the little film. I checked Rotten Tomatoes; i see at this early point it's 30 for 30, with various levels of hyperbole attached to the reviews.
Cannes is rapidly approaching, and the belief is that most Oscar hopefuls will NOT screen there, the thought being they don't want to show their hand in Europe first, and during what's considered a "middle" period of time prior to awards season. The thought seems to be that the earlier in the year Sundance is a superior way to get some word of mouth going on your little Indie that could, while bigger movies with more acclaimed directors should bypass Cannes and wait for the late summer festival circuit.
I guess the biggest advantage Call Me has is that it's already been seen by several critics and the word is very good. There will be many hopefuls that simply won't have the goods when the time comes. A few will.
So: are we looking at yet another smallish film, and another LGBT film at that, having a big say in the Oscars this fall? And, what about the film's box office prospects? I mean, unless the film gets great steam and ends up being a big winner, it seems like it'd be tough for the film to do great box office. Still, with word of mouth being as strong as it is, perhaps it will do well over the course of the winter.
Has anyone seen the film? I'm really curious about it, enough to be considering a trip through the source material.
Have a good weekend everyone!
