Twilight breaks as its passionate female fanbase bares its box office fangs.
By Box Office Whisperer, November 21, 2008

After Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (HPOT6) vacated this weekend for next summer, both Bolt (BOLT) and Twilight (TWLIT) jumped at the opening and entered the frame. How much will they benefit from this fortuitous turn of events? Let’s listen to the shrieks from the Hollywood Stock Exchange®.

2008 has been the year of the fangirls as the fairer gender has shown its mighty pull at the box office. Twilight has joined Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds and Sex and the City in the all-time top 10 films with the most advanced ticket sales. Based on the best-selling novel by the Stephanie Meyer, Twilight has sent females of all ages into a frenzy with its vampire tale of forbidden love. The buzz on the Robert Pattinson (RPATT) and Kirsten Stewart (KSTEW) romance has been off the chart as thousands of showings have already been sold out. Biting into 3,419 theaters, Twilight should easily debut in first place at around $64 million.

Disney (DISNX) appears to have a winner in the CG animated Bolt, the canine TV star who thinks he has superpowers. Voice talents Miley Cyrus (MCYRU) and John Travolta (JTRAV) have done their share promoting the PG-rated film to the target family audience. Bolt probably would have taken the top spot any other year, but will have to settle for second place with a still robust $45 million opening.

After the biggest opening weekend for the 007 franchise, Quantum of Solace (JB22) looks to tail off considerably due to its mixed reviews and word of mouth. A drop of slightly more than 50% would put James Bond at $32 million.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (MADG2) will suffer from direct competition against Bolt and drop down to $17 million.

That’s the whisper from the trading floor.
