Quills co-stars Kate Winslet and Geoffrey Rush reteam to play another pair of French historical figures in The Magician's Wife. Set in 1856, the French government, in respond to a rebellion headed by a spiritual leader with "magical powers" in Algeria, sends a magician and his wife to debunk his powers and counter the man's influence. The film is directed by Francois Girard (The Red Violin). Melissa Mathison (The Black Stallion, The Indian in the Cupboard) adapted the script from a novel by Brian Moore. The project Smoke and Mirrors is also based on the same story.
