Columbia Pictures was founded in 1924 by Joe Brandt and brothers Jack and Harry Cohn, whose first film offices were known around town as 'Corn-Beef-and-Cabbage'. Although the initial efforts by the group were moderately successful, it was Columbia's discovery of Frank Capra in 1927 that truly jumpstarted the fledging studio. Capra directed Columbia films for 12 years, including the classic It Happened One Night. During the 1940s, Columbia became the first studio to also enter the world of television. Although the brothers Cohn died in the late 1950s, the studio has maintained its success throughout the remainder of the century. After a series of mergers and acquisitions in the late 1980s, Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures eventually came together under the all-encompassing Sony Pictures.
Sony Studio Fund will invest in films released domestically under the Sony umbrella of Columbia/TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, and Screen Gems.
Studio Funds delist and relist annually in September.
