John Irving's screenplay adaptation of his novel by the same name. The story chronicles the rocky relationship between an obstetrician/abortionist (Michael Caine) working at an orphanage and his surrogate son-apprentice (Tobey Maguire). The son leaves the orphanage where he was raised and discovers that his future lies in the mysteries of his past.
Other Irving novels translated to the silver screen include The Hotel New Hampshire, The World According to Garp and A Prayer for Owen Meany (retitled "Simon Birch").
