With the release of The Blues Brothers in 1980, Dan Aykroyd was the first comedian to parlay a Saturday Night Live sketch into a box office hit. The film helped launch Aykroyd's career, as well as the career of fellow SNL alum John Belushi. Not only was the film a box office smash, but the longtime friends recorded two albums as Jake and Elwood Blues, and even embarked on a ten-city concert tour. Upon leaving SNL in the early 80's, Aykroyd continued his success with such films as 1983's Trading Places and 1984's Ghostbusters. By the end of the decade, Aykroyd began to branch out into more dramatic roles, earning an Oscar nomination for his poignant turn in 1989's Driving Miss Daisy. Aykroyd has since balanced comedic roles with dramatic ones, appearing in 1991's My Girl as well as 1995's slapstick Tommy Boy.
