Auteur of the bizarre and horrific, Canadian director David Cronenberg began his early movie-making career with cult classics such as 1979's The Brood and 1981's Scanners. In 1986, Cronenberg directed a remake of the 1959 film The Fly, which starred Jeff Goldblum in one of his most memorable roles. The film was well received and Cronenberg's attention to gory detail allowed the film's make-up artists to take home Academy Awards that year. Always testing the boundaries of filmmaking, Cronenberg took several liberties with William S. Burrough's Naked Lunch -- an avante garde work in its own right -- with the 1991 film release of the same name. His 1996 effort, Crash, stunned the jury at Cannes, earning the director a special jury prize for "originality, daring, and audacity." The award could just as well have been for Cronenberg's entire filmography.
