Francis Ford Coppola began his jaunt into the entertainment industry as Roger Corman's right-hand man on his films. He received experience working in every aspect of film production during his time with Corman, which prepared him for the struggles of the filmmaking process.
In 1970, Coppola first received his first taste of fame and success when he won an Oscar for the script for Patton. The movie won him recognition in Hollywood and earned him the chance to direct.
In 1972, Coppola directed The Godfather, which went on to become one of the biggest critical and commercial hits of all time. The movie was followed by its sequel which also became a monster hit and earned six Academy Awards.
In 1979, Coppola took on his most ambitious endeavor to date with Apocalpse Now. The movie ran a year over schedule and had to be financed using most of Coppola's personal funds. However, despite a production that was riddled with complications, the movie was a critical success and won two Academy Awards.
In addition to his success as a director, Coppola has produced a number of movie classics as well. Movies such as The Black Stallion, American Graffiti, Kagemusha, and The Secret Garden are all products of Coppola's skills as a producer.
