Kimberly Peirce studied English and Japanese literature at the University of Chicago before receiving a Master's of Fine Arts from Columbia University. She has also written extensively about film. Her literary background has served her well with her films, 1994's The Last Good Breath and 1999's groundbreaking Boys Don't Cry. For her work on Boys Don't Cry, Peirce won the award for Best Directorial Debut from the National Board of Review, the FIPRESCI award at the London Film Festival and the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best New Filmmaker.
