A Knight's Tale follows Heath Ledger as a peasant who harbors dreams of becoming a jousting knight. When his master suddenly dies, he concocts a scheme to impersonate the deceased nobleman. In order to pull off the ruse, the peasant hires Geoffrey Chaucer, future author of The Canterbury Tales, to help him forge a few documents.
Brian Helgeland, who shared a screenwriting Oscar for 1998's L.A. Confidential, will write, direct and produce the film. Discovered by a casting agent while spinning records at Gwyneth Paltrow's birthday party, the virtually unknown Shannyn Sossamon has nabbed the female lead role.
A Knight's Tale has also been titled In Shining Armour.
