Mike Nichols was born Michael Igor Pechkowsky in Berlin in 1931 and emigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago when he was just seven. Nichols began his career as an actor, studying with the legendary acting teacher Lee Strasberg in New York. After a less than stellar beginning to his acting career, Nichols decided to give directing Broadway plays a shot and scored big with Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park. Nichols made his feature film directing debut with 1966's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and secured an Oscar nomination. He followed that up with 1967's The Graduate and this time walked away with the Oscar for Best Director. Nichols has also been nominated for his work in 1983's Silkwood and 1988's Working Girl.
