Mekhi Phifer had no acting experience whatsoever when he answered a casting call for Spike Lee's 1995 urban drama Clockers. Phifer beat out almost 1,000 other aspirants for the pivotal role in the movie as a small-time street corner drug dealer who is suspected of killing another "Clocker", the low man on the drug-dealing totem pole. Phifer, a 24-year-old New York native, then went on to play an ex-con trying to straighten out his life in 1997's Soul Food. Phifer will make a starring turn in O, a teenage high school version of Shakespeare's Othello. Phifer will play a basketball star who is duped by his cunning best friend into believing his girlfriend has been unfaithful to him.
