Description

O takes "Othello" from the past and places him in high school. Mekhi Phifer plays Odin (Othello) who is convinced by his his friend Hugo (Iago) that his girlfriend Desi (Desdemona) is cheating on him. What Odin doesn't understand is Hugo's motivation. Hugo misleads Odin because he is jealous of all that Odin has. Julia Stiles plays Desi and Josh Hartnett plays Hugo.
Rain Phoenix, Elden Henson and Andrew Keegan also star with experience being lent to the production from Martin Sheen and John Heard. Brad Kaaya developed the adapted screenplay for O with help from the Sundance Institute Writing Program.
Originally scheduled for release in October 1999, Miramax has postponed the date repeatedly due to real-life school violence. It was announced in April 2001 that Lion's Gate acquired the rights to the controversial film from Miramax with plans of an August 2001 release.
