Writer/Director Paul Verhoeven started his career in the Royal Netherlands Navy making documentaries. He studied math and physics at the University of Leiden before entering the Navy. After he received international success for films Soldier of Orange and The Fourth Man, Verhoeven moved to the U.S. In 1985 he directed Flesh + Blood and achieved box office success with Robocop (1987) and Total Recall (1990).
Known for his use of violence and graphic sexual situations, Verhoeven once again shined with his 1992 sex thriller, Basic Instinct, which starred Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. His totally forgettable, 1995 film Showgirls earned him a total of 2 million dollars. However, he rebounded in 1997 with the sci-fi war flick Starship Troopers.
