Description
Hannibal marks the return of Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the role for which earned him an Oscar. Ridley Scott directs the high-profile sequel which almost didn't happen. Julianne Moore takes over the role of Clarice M. Starling played by Jodi Foster in Silence of the Lambs. Italian actors Giancarlo Giannini and Francesca Neri have also joined the cast along with Ray Liotta.
Although Silence of the Lambs swept five of the top Oscars at 1991's Academy Awards, the development of Hannibal started out with Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme and screenwriter Ted Tally dropping out of the picture. However, Scott was quickly named as Demme's replacement and Steve Zaillian of Schindler's List was brought in for a rewrite and to broaden the story for the movie audience, including a new ending. Moore was tapped when Jodi Foster turned down the offer to appear in the sequel. Foster cited scheduling problems between Hannibal and her own production of Flora Plum.
