Description
As a writer for several variety shows in the late 60's and early 70's, Steve Martin refined his comic skills as an occasional performer. His reputation as a comedian began to grow as he toured the clubs and released Grammy Award-winning comedy albums in 1977 and 1978. With his appearances on Saturday Night Live, Martin helped heighten his profile even more, and in October 1979, also helped the show achieve its highest ratings of all time for a single episode. With his 1979 film The Jerk, Martin also proved that movie-going audiences were ready for his off-beat, inane brand of humor. Martin had two hit films in 1987, with Roxanne and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and again scored two hits in 1991, with L.A. Story and Father of the Bride. Always testing new boundaries, Martin assumed a dramatic role in 1997's The Spanish Prisoner.
