The old glitz of the roaring 1920s was no match for the new flash of modern wizardry as Iron Man 3 [IRNM3] banked an estimated $72.5 million to remain atop the weekend box office. The superhero sequel tailed off 58% from its second-best ever debut to bring its running total to $284.9 million.
The Great Gatsby [GATSB] partied to a better than expected $51.1 million opening in second place. The 3D adaptation of the classic novel drew an audience that was 59% female and 69% over the age of 25. Interestingly, those younger than 25 enjoyed the music-dirven adult drama more than those older than 25 as their Cinemascore were A- and B, respectively.
Pain & Gain [PAING] took the third spot with $5 million. The action comedy has pumped $41.6 million after 3 weekends.
Tyler Perry Presents Peeples [WEPEP] flopped with just $4.9 million in its debut in fourth place.
Expanding wide into 854 theaters, Mud [MUD] grossed $2.4 million.
