According to the trades, director Jon Favreau [JFAVR] and Robert Downey Jr. [RDOWN] will next take on the feature adaptation of the graphic novel Cowboys & Aliens [CBALN]. The project has long been in development with Downey Jr. becoming attached last year. The latest script is by the hottest sceenwriters today, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the duo behind both The Transformers and Star Trek franchises.
DreamWorks hopes to start production on Cowboys & Aliens during summer 2010 and Paramount has an option to co-distribute the film. Favreau is also a top candidate to direct Paramount's The Avengers [AVNGR] that features Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man. It's unclear how this side track would affect the preparation for the massive undertaking of teaming up various Marvel superheroes for The Avengers, currently scheduled for release on May 4, 2012.
