Whisper Numbers: Tomb Raider targets Black Panther

A new challenger will attempt to prevent Black Panther [BPNTH.BW] from becoming the first film since Avatar to top the box office for five consecutive weekends. Another 60% holdover would be $25 million, which could be enough for Black Panther to retain the box office crown.

Alicia Vikander [AVIKA] takes over the role of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider [TOMB3] based on the 2013 videogame, which rebooted the series. Paramount opened the original Lara Croft Tomb Raider to $47.7 million in 2001, while the sequel  Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life fell to $21.8 million in 2003. Warner Bros. is releasing the new PG-13 rated actioner set on an uncharted island in the Devil’s Sea off Japan. While Vikander is an Oscar winner herself, she is not as well-known as the tabloid favorite Angelina Jolie. Playing in 3854 theaters, Tomb Raider could uncover $24 million.

Targeted at families, A Wrinkle in Time [AWITM] should be able to hold better than 50% in its sophomore outing and finish at about $18 million

Nick Robinson [NROBI] stars in the gay coming-of-age story Love, Simon [SVHSA]. Fox sneaked the PG-13 rated romantic comedy last weekend to positive reception, which will generate buzz along with the excellent reviews. Love, Simon may bring home $12 million from 2401 locations.

Roadside Attractions targets Christian music fans with I Can Only Imagine [ICOIM] about the real-life inspiration for the song by MercyMe that sold 2.5 million copies. With robust advance ticket sales in 1620 theaters, I Can Only Imagine could take in $5 million.

7 Days in Entebbe [ENTEB] chronicles a real-life plane hijacking from 1976. The PG-13 rated actioner from Focus Features will only appeal to older men who remember the incident. 7 Days in Entebbe could capture $2 million from 834 theaters.

That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
