Whisper Numbers: Rampage to disrupt A Quiet Place

Within the last month, Hollywood has released a videogame adaptation in Tomb Raider and a giant monster flick in Pacific Rim: Uprising, not to mentioned Ready Player One set in a VR gaming world. Now comes Rampage [RAMPG], a giant monster movie based on a videogame. Star Dwayne Johnson [TROCK] is also coming off the videogame inspired Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Warner Bros. hopes the goodwill from that blockbuster success will extend to Rampage, which has received mixed reviews. The opening is unlikely to match San Andreas’ $54.6 million, Johnson’s previous effort for the studio with director Brad Peyton. Starting in 4101 theaters, Rampage could score $38 million.

After the best debut for an original horror story, A Quiet Place [AQPLC] looks to translate its excellent word of mouth into a long stay at the box office. A Quiet Place should hold around 57% for a $28 million second weekend.

On its third outing, Ready Player One [RDYP1] looks to capture $14 million.

Truth or Dare [TRUOD] is the latest PG-13 rated horror from Blumhouse. Unfortunately, it’s likely to get lost in the shadow of A Quiet Place. Reviews are not strong enough to pull in audiences other than teenage girls. Truth or Dare may collect $13 million from 3029 locations.

With good buzz for a raunchy comedy, Blockers [TPACT] should hold better than 50% of its opening for an $11 million sophomore frame.

After 3 weeks of moderate release, Isle of Dogs [ISLDG] finally expands wide into 1930 theaters. The stop-motion animated film could bring home $5 million.

Fun Academy opens Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero [STUBY] in 1685 theaters. With little buzz, the animated film may not make $2 million.

The R-rated political thriller Beirut [HWACT] has earned favorable reviews, but is playing in just 755 theaters. Bleecker Street opened Beirut on Wednesday and took in $200 thousand, which indicates a weekend around $1 million.

That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
