It certainly never achieved for me the wonder of the wordless openings of "There will be blood" or "Wall-E," to say nothing of Chaplin.
It's fine, but it's not the tour-de-force one might imagine from its wider reception. I don't feel a strong sense of partisanship for any of the best picture nominees: on charm, MIDNP thrashes ARTST; on underwhelming, ARTST has a serious rival in HUGO. I haven't seen THELP, WHORS, ELAIC or DSCND. I will see DSCND, but I enjoyed SIDEW and especially "About Schmidt" less than others seemed to.
The movies I enjoyed and admired last year were other ones.
