Yes Ed, I'm perfectly aware of that. That's particularly why I'm shocked at the thought of this getting nominated, let alone winning.

This movie couldn't hold City Lights' jock.

I have quite the affinity for silent film. And I'm familiar with the actual actors who DID struggle when talkies came into being. This movie is cute in places; it's sweet at times. But it has no power; viscerally, emotionally, in ANY way, to warrant this acclaim. My God, Kasdan's nearly silent opening 10 minutes of Raider of the Lost Ark is superior in every way to this script.

And after having slept on it, I think that whatever awards this movie takes on Oscar night is going to leave me feeling vaguely pissed off. It's not on the level of being a film everyone focuses on for Oscar night.

Particularly the lead actor award. The range of emotion, the degree of subtlety and depth required, this performance doesn't come anywhere close to either Clooney or Brad Pitt's performances, or Oldman's for that matter. There is more going on in Oldman's head, which is only revealed through those steely eyes, in 10 minutes of TTSS that deserves praise when compared to every performance in The Artist, which is simply swinging for the cheap seats at every turn. It's not the actor's fault; it's the story they're telling. It is what it is. Which is not much at the end of the day.

I'm a little shocked right now...at how underwhelmed I am by The Artist. It was a pretty large disappointment for me. goodvibe61 Jan 28, 00:04

One thing for sure: If this picture wins the Academy Award for the best screenplay, I'll be shocked. All credibility will be forever lost. {nm} goodvibe61 Jan 28, 00:31

Academy always have upsets.. they vote for who they like.. not what everyone else likes sometimes ;-) {nm} karspov Jan 28, 01:14

Voting for what "they" like, is what they are supposed to do innit? {nm} PaulBuxton2011 Jan 28, 01:49

You know, there actually is a screenplay for this movie, and it describes every single scene you see, it's not just the "dialogue" {nm} TheWeekendWarrior Jan 28, 06:02

There probably is a lot of dialogue in the screenplay too (there's enough lipsmoving)... you just don't hear it {nm} JMT-NL Jan 28, 06:12

Any awards which MONYB takes over its rivals would be welcome, including BPITT. {nm} second gary Jan 28, 07:58

If Pitt wins, he has just won for playing himself. How much talent does that require? {nm} HarryWarden Jan 28, 22:15

It's going to win...I thought Midnight in Paris, War Horse, 50/50 and Tree of Life were all better... {nm} RoBoGuru Jan 28, 03:36

It certainly never achieved for me the wonder of the wordless openings of "There will be blood" or "Wall-E," to say nothing of Chaplin. second gary Jan 28, 06:42

It's not in the same league as any of the films you mention. Not even close. {nm} goodvibe61 Jan 28, 08:42
