The "triangle" is a reference to the Bob Layton era, which is why Layton was at the Comicon panel.
The movie is loosely based off of Layton's "Power of Iron Man" and "Armor Wars" period, with pieces of Stan Lee's "Crimson Dynamo" storyline. Layton co-created half the characters in the film, including Sam Rockwell's "Justin Hammer, plus they're using other design concepts beyond just the triangle.
