Movies

Though it may be the public tastes that have changed, not the Academy's, based on what movies it is not possible to make

Posted by: RogerMore on Jul 24, 13:35 in response to Dales' post Definitely a possibility.

Taking a random year, the top grossing films for 1971 were:

#1 Fiddler on the Roof (nominated for 8 categories includign BP, director, actor)

#2 The French Connection (8 noms, 5 wins)

#3 Diamonds are Forever

#4 Dirty Harry

#5 Billy Jack

#6 Summer of '42 (5 noms)

#7 Last Picture Show (8 noms, 2 wins)

#8 Carnal Knowledge (1 nom)

#9 A Clockwork Orange (4 noms including BP, Director)

#10 Bedknobs and Broomsticks (5 noms)

Seven Oscar nominated films in the top 10 box office earners, including 3 of the 5 BP nominated films, and including some pretty subversive/artsy films like the Last Picture Show and A Clockwork Orange.

Compare against 2016 - the top 10 at the NA box office had three films that were nominated (Rogue One, Zootopia and Jungle Book), all in non-major categories (best animated, special FX, etc). La La Land, the most nominated, was #19 at the box office for the year, Arrival which made $100M was #29. Hidden Figures was #14. Manchester by the Sea and Lion made $50M each and were in the #66 and #69.

I'd suggest that these movies are similar to the sorts of movies that have historically been nominated for Oscars, so the Academy hasn't really changed that much But what has changed is that Hollywood has gotten better at delivering what audiences really want, and for many people that's not Oscar-type movies.

I've long felt the Academy has a choice to make. Dales Jul 24, 11:48

winning best picture did everything for the artist. No one sees that movie without the awards campaign and the win Moviesnob Jul 24, 12:00

it's not the Academy's job to pander to Joe Sixpack. and plenty of Oscar winners have their box office fortunes improved by the awards {nm} slipping jimmy Jul 24, 12:00

I don't think that, in the 50s-80s, they were pandering to Joe Sixpack. {nm} Dales Jul 24, 12:11

or, the movies studios made for Joe Sixpack were just much better quality in general {nm} slipping jimmy Jul 24, 12:12

Definitely a possibility. Dales Jul 24, 12:22

during the heyday of the studio system, pre-1970s, there was almost nothing that could be thought of as "independent cinema" slipping jimmy Jul 24, 13:29

thats part of the reason why they make less. They are giving the audience what they want {nm} Moviesnob Jul 24, 14:31

It is a peer vs populism question. The Academy exists as a peer group, awarding their fellows for what they think ... gsquared Jul 24, 12:51
