So I'll ask: How much money do you think a film like ROMA, with this kind of hype, could generate at limited locations in LA?
The film should easily be able to recover the investment for those screens. Netflix's business model will continue to make it extremely difficult to actually figure out the dollars and cents of this on a per film basis.
Again, I guess I fail to clearly understand what they want. They want to bring in these big named directors to ake a good film, and then they clearly seem to want the awards acclaim, they certainly complain enough about it, although they clearly at the same time don't care about audiences seeing the film the way it was meant to be seen. Ask Cuaron how the film was envisioned, was it envisioned to be seen on a television or in a movie theater? When he executed the story in his mind, as he frames each and every nano second of the movie, is it with a computer screen in mind, or a movie screen?
Netflix wants the publicity of the awards. They want nothing to do with going down the same road everybody else goes down to attain it.
If anyone seriously believes that Roma couldn't make 30K per screen in a limited run, well, I just don't know what to say to that. Of course, when you don't want to market that effort in any way, when you trying to do the minimum to satisfy a requirement and nothing more, when your business model already makes audience screenings anethema to your business plan, it would seem like things are pre-destined to go south.
Whatever. Go with god and it is what it is.
