Based on the Graham Greene novel, The End of the Affair concerns the spiritual pact an adulterous woman makes, and the moral and spiritual dilemma that this deal with God puts her in.
Julianne Moore and Ralph Fiennes as they carry on an affair during the war behind the back of Moore's husband, played by Stephen Rea. During the London blitz, Fiennes disappears and Moore begins to fear for her lover's life. Searching desperately for an answer to this apparent tragedy, she points the finger at their immoral affair for putting Fiennes' life in danger. She prays to God, vowing to return to her husband if her lover's life is spared.
After the war, Fiennes reappears in her life and she realizes her spiritual vow and the yearnings of her heart are in conflict. Adding a further tragic dimension to this illicit relationship is the fact that Moore is now terminally ill.
