First trailer for Triple 9

Open Road has dropped the first, redband trailer for the crime drama Triple 9 [TRPL9].  Casey Affleck [CAFFL] stars as an idealistic rookie police officer partnered with a hard-nosed veteran payed by Woody Harrelson [WHARR].  In a Atlanta run by crooked cops and Russian mobsters, the rookis is targeted for a 999 (code for officer down) as a diversion for a heist.  Triple 9 hits theaters February 19th.

Box Score: The Martian close to Gravity

Buoyed by free publicity and excellent word of mouth, The Martian [MARTN] blasted off with an estimated $55.0 million, within striking distance of the October record of $55.8 million set by Gravity two years ago. 

Last weekend's champ Hotel Transylvania 2 [HTRN2] secured second with $33.0 million.  The animated sequel decayed just 32% in its second weekend to bring its total to $90.5 million.

Expanding to wide release, Sicario [SICAR] took in $12.1 million to take third place.  The crime...

Whisper Numbers: Will The Martian overcome Gravity?

NASA announced the discovery of recent water on Mars this week just as The Martian [MARTN] arrives theaters. Fox can’t be any happier with the free publicity for their PG-13 rated sci-fi film.  Matt Damon [MDAMO] stars as an astronaut stranded on the red planet who must survive solely on his scientific knowledge. First trailer for The Choice

Lionsgate has premiered the trailer for the romance The Choice [CHOCE] based on the Nicholas Sparks novel on Moviefone.  Teresa Palmer [TPALM] stars as a young woman who catches the eye of her new neighbor, played by Benjamin Walker [BWALK].   She must decide whether she wants to be with him or her doctor boyfriend, played by Tom Welling.  The Choice hits theaters on February 5th.

Gramecy Pictures has revealed the first trailer for the horror film The Forest [FORST].  Set in the Aokigahara Forest of Japan where people go to commit suicide, Natalie Dormer [NDORM] stars as a young American who goes in search of her twin sister to uncover her fate.  The Forest arrives in theaters January 8th.

New trailer for The Revenant

Fox has unveiled the full-length trailer for the western The Revenant [REVEN], which was inspired by true events.  Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu [AGINA] sets out for wilderness to film in natural light conditions.  The Revenant opens limited on Christmas before expanding wide on January 8th.

Box Score: Hotel Transylvania 2 sets September best

Sony continues its recent winning streak as its animated sequel  Hotel Transylvania 2 [HTRN2] booked an estimated $47.5 million to set a new opening weekend record for September.  The first film held the previous record of $42.5 milion.  The family film brought out an audience that was 59% female and 60% under 25.

The Intern [INTRN] debuted in second place with $18.2 million.  The audience for the workplace comedy skewed 89% over 25.

Whisper Numbers: Hotel Transylvania 2 opens for families

A couple of directors return after a long hiatus, but they will be no match for the animated monsters of Hotel Transylvania 2 [HTRN2]. The first Hotel Transylvania set the September opening weekend record in 2012 with $42.5 million. Adam Sandler [ASAND], Selena Gomez [SGOME] and Andy Samberg [ASAMB] reprise their roles in the PG-rated sequel from Sony.
