Audiences got scared into theaters this post holiday weekend. The dynamic duo of Martin Scorsese [MSCOR] and Leonardo DiCaprio [LDACP] did it one more time with Shutter Island [SHISL]. DiCaprio played a U.S. Marshal assigned to look for a female murderer who escaped from an insane asylum. When a storm cuts off communication on the island and other inmates escape, confusion and danger loom. The well-received thriller brought in $40.2 million from 2,991 theaters. It is a career best opening for both DiCaprio and Scorsese. Audiences should continue to give DiCaprio some love and support as Shutter Island hopes to see a good run for the coming weeks.
Last weekend's champ Valentine's Day [VSDAY] fell to second place with $17.2 million. The total for the holiday romance is now $87.4 million. Although in third place, Avatar is still king. The ground-breaking, record-setting, James Cameron-glorifying film amassed another $16.1 million bringing its domestic 10-week total to $687.8 million. Worldwide, the Cameron extravaganza has made a staggering $2.47 billion.
Parents continued to take their little ones to Percy Jackson & the Olympians [PJALT]. The crowd-pleasing children's adventure took in $15.3 million giving it a total of $58.8 million.
Benicio Del Toro [BDELT] is still a hairy affair on the English countryside with The Wolfman [WOLFM]. The goth type horror added another $9.8 million to bring its total take to $50.3 million.
