Box Score: Elysium rises above the rest

In a crowded weekend featuring four new wide releases, Elysium [ELYSM] came out on top with an estimated $30.5 million.  Despite a bigger budget and Matt Damon in the lead, the sci-fi film failed to surpass the debut of director Neil Bomkamp's previous District 9.  Males made up 61% of the audience.

We're the Millers [WEMIL] took a better than expected $26.6 million to open in second place.  The comedy has grossed $38.0 million in its first five days and should enjoy great word of mouth.

Whisper Numbers: Will Planes reach Elysium?

As the summer movie season winds down, four new releases crowd into theaters this weekend led by the summer’s last Hollywood blockbuster hopeful. Four years after the low-budget District 9 opened to $37.4 million in 2009, director Neil Blomkamp [NBLOM] is back with his second feature Elysium [ELYSM]. The big-budget sci-fi film stars Matt Damon [MDAMO] as a dying man in a dystopian future where the wealthy 1% lives in a pristine space station above the poor 99% masses on a ruined earth....

First trailer for The Monuments Men

Sony has unveiled the teaser trailer for the based on war drama The Monuments Men [MONUM] on Apple.   Coming off like a Ocean's 11 prequel Ocean's Eight, the World War II set film stars George Clooney [GCLOO] and Matt Damon [MDAMO] as U.S. soldiers who led a platoon tasked with retrieving stolen Nazi art masterpieces behind enemy lines before the Germans under orders destroy everything.  The Mounments Men reach theaters on December 18th.

New trailer for Captain Phillips

Sony has launched a second trailer for the high-seas thriller Captain Phillips [CDUTY] based on the true story of the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama off the eastern coast of Africa.  The new trailer offers a sympathetic look from the Somali pirates' point of view while introducing the U.S. Navy SEALs into the endgame.  Captain Phillips will be the first of two Tom Hanks [THANK] Oscar hopefuls  this award season when  it lands in theaters on October 11th.

Fox has released the full-length domestic trailer for the crime thriller The Counselor [CNSLR]. Michael Fassbender [MFASS] stars as a respected lawyer whose decision to make an one-time illegal deal comes back to haunt him as the illicit transaction spirals out of control.  Directed by Ridley Scott [RSCOT] , The Counselor hits theaters on October 25th.

Warner Bros. has debuted the trailer for the off-beat romance Her [HERSJ] on Apple. Directed by Spike Jonze [SJONZ], the film stars Joaquin Phoenix [JPHOE] as a mild-mannered man just getting over the heartbreak of a long relationship.  He becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system that promises to be an intuitive artificial intelligence unique to each user.  He installs "Samantha", voiced by Scarlett Johansson [SJOHA], who turns out to be insightful, sensitive and funny.  ...

New trailer for Thor: The Dark World

Disney has unveiled the full trailer for the Marvel superhero sequel Thor: The Dark World [THOR2].  An ancient race of  Dark Elves has emerged from an alternate universe looking for revenge against Asgard.   Thor must enlist the help of his half-brother Loki and his earthling girlfriend Jane Foster to journey across the cosmos to stop the army led by Malekith before plunging all the Nine Realms are plunged back into darkness. Thor: The Dark World arrives in theaters November 8th.
