Box Score: Insidious: Chapter 2 haunts the competition

Scaring up an estimated $41.1 million, the low-budget horror sequel Insidious: Chapter 2 [NSID2] led the weekend box office with the second best September opening ever behind Hotel Trasnsylvania's $42.5 million.  The debut is director James Wan's [JWAN] second $40 million opener of the year after The Conjuring's $41.9 million.  Insidious: Chapter 2 brought out an audience that was 52% males and 62% under th e age of 25.

New trailer for Oldboy

FilmDistrict has released the theatrical, green band trailer for the thriller Oldboy [OLDBO] directed by Spike Lee [SLEE].  Josh Brolin [JBROL] plays a family man who has been imprisoned for 20 years by a mysterious figure with a secret agenda.   Has the shocking twisted ending of the original South Korean film been preserved in the American remake?  We'll find out when Oldboy opens on November 27th.

First trailer for Grudge Match

Warner Bros. has uploaded the teaser trailer for the sports comedy Grudge Match [GRDGM].  Robert "Raging Bull" De Niro [RDENI] and  Sylvester "Rocky" Stallone [SSTAL] star as old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for a final rematch 30 years later.  Kevin Hart [KHART] co-stars as a promoter.  Grudge Match will take place on Christmas Day.

With a Friday the 13th starting off the weekend, FilmDistrict releases the horror sequel Insidious Chapter 2 [NSID2]. Patrick Wilson [PWILS] and Rose Byrne [RBRYN] reprise their roles from the first Insidious, which opened to $13.3 million in April of 2011 and dropped less than 30% in each of the next 3 weekends. First trailer for Homefront

Open Road has debuted the trailer for the action film Homefront [HMFRN]. Jason Statham [JSTAT] stars as a former drug enforcement agent who moves to a small town to raise his daughter and escape his violent past.  Unfortunately, he discovers his town is beseiged by drugs and run by a meth dealer named  Gator, played by James Franco [JAFRA].  Homefront arrives in theaters on November 27th.

New trailer for August: Osage County

The Weinstein Co. has unveiled the second trailer for the drama August: Osage County [AUGOC] based on the Pulitzer Award-winning play. Meryl Streep [MSTRE] stars as the matriarch of the dysfunctional Weston family that reunites for a funeral.    The movie premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival to rave reviews, though with a different ending from the play that may be changed by its theatrical release on Christmas.

Box Score: Riddick makes a triumphant return

After a nine year absence from the silver screen, Vin Diesel's Riddick [RIDC2] earned an estimated $18.7 million to lead the weekend box office.  The opening fell short of 2004's Chronicles of Riddick's $24.3 million.  The sci-fi sequel connected with Diesel's fanbase at 59% males and 37% Hispanics. 

Lee Daniels' The Butler [BUTLR] stepped down to second place with $8.9 million.  The historical drama has served up $91.9 million.

Sony has revealed the teaser trailer for the sci-fi remake of RoboCop [ROBOC] on Apple. Warner Bros. has uploaded the full, new trailer for the space thriller Gravity [GRVTY].  Sandra Bullock [SBULL] and George Clooney [GCLOO] star as shuttle astronauts working on the International Space Station when an accident sends them adrift into space. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón [ACUAR], Gravity at the Venice Film Festival to rave reviews and Oscar buzz.
