Whisper Numbers: Oz may be too powerful for Wonderstone
A new film about modern magicians will be no match for the reigning magician turned wizard at the box office. After a spectacular opening that lived up to expectations, Oz: the Great and Powerful [OZTGP] will remain strong with many schools out for spring break. Disney’s own Alice in Wonderland declined 46% in its second weekend. Oz the Great and Powerful should follow suit in similar fashion and retain the top spot with about $42 million.
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone [BURTW] brings Steve Carell [SCARE] and Jim Carrey [JCARR] together for the first time as rival magicians in Las Vegas. The comedy has an appealing premise, but the results hasn’t been all that funny. Warner Bros. may be able to attract guys who are not interested in Munchkin land, but the PG-13 rating will keep some parents from bringing their kids. Performing in 3160 locations, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone could pull out $16 million.
Sony's R-rated thriller The Call [TCALL] stars Halle Berry [HBERR] as a 911 operator trying to save a girl kidnapped by a serial killer. Berry hasn’t opened a film as the lead since 2007’s Perfect Stranger debuted with $11.2 million. However, it’s been that long since her film targeted older women and African-Americans. Dialing into 2507 theaters, The Call may collect $12 million.
Jack the Giant Slayer [JACGK] had its legs cut off by Oz the Great and Powerful. The third weekend may level off to $5 million.
