Whisper Numbers: Evil Dead is no dinosaur

Two classic movies return this weekend, one in the form of a remake and the other with a conversion to 3D. Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult hit The Evil Dead has been re-imagined as Evil Dead [EVILD] for today's moviegoers. The R-rated horror film has been generating buzz ever since its bloody unveiling at Comic-Con last September. Sony has highlighted the gory nature of the story, which is a departure from the recent string of PG-13 rated horror films about ghosts and possessions. Raimi and the star of the original Bruce Campbell have been doing lots of press as the film’s producers, which not only reassure the series’ older fans, but could turn them into paying customers along with the young male target audience. The reboot has also earned excellent reviews, which will also help. Opening in 3025 theaters, Evil Dead could summon $25 million.

The delay for 3D may have salvage rather than dent the opening of G.I. JOE: Retaliation [GIJO2]. The sequel is likely to have been front-loaded by its fanboy audience and could drop more than 50% to $19 million in its sophomore session.

With the re-release of old blockbusters in 3D offering diminishing returns, Jurassic Park 3D [JP3D] may be the last of its kind. The 1993 film directed by Steven Spielberg broke opening weekend record at its time for seemingly bringing dinosaurs to life. It spawned a couple of sequels as well as theme park attractions. Universal hopes an added dimension will entice nostalgic parents to bring their children to experience the classic on the big screen. Exhibited at 2771 locations, Jurassic Park 3D may admit $17 million.

The Croods [CROOD] crossed the century mark this week and looks to add another $16 million in its third weekend.

Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor [TMRGC] debuted to better than expected results. However, his films typically suffer steep drops and Temptation won’t be the exception. A 55% tumble would bring in $9.5 million

That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
