Connecting on an estimated $27.3 million opening weekend, the Jackie Robinson biopic 42 [42] out scored the competition at the weekend box office. The historical baseball film attracted an older audience that was 83% over the age of 25, while skewing slightly female at 52%. With excellent word of mouth, 42 should enjoy a long run.
Scary Movie V [SCAR5] debuted a distant second at $15.2 million. The horror spoof appealed to an young urban crowd that was 75% under 25.
Staying at the third spot, The Croods [CROOD] earned $13.2 million to bring its cumulative gross to $142.5 million.
G.I.JOE: Retaliation [GIJO2] finished fourth wtih $10.8 million to push its total to $102.4 million.
Evil Dead [EVILD] fell 63% in its second weekend to $9.5 million while fellow sohpomore film Jurassic Park 3D [JP3D] dropped 53% to $8.8 million.
Expanding to 514 theaters, The Places Beyond the Pine [TPBTP] banked $4.1 million.
