Even after tumbling 65% from its opening weekend, the action sequel Fast & Furious 6 [FAST6] managed to stay in first place with an estimated $34.5 million. The street racing adventure set in Europe has already amassed $170.4 million.
In oneof the biggest upset of the year, Now You see Me [NYSME] earned $28.1 million to debut in the second spot ahead of After Earth [1THAE] at $27.0 million. The caper about magicians pulling heists performed much better than expected by attracting both genders equally, with 52% of the crowd under the age of 30. With favorable word of mouth, Now You see Me should hold up for one week at least.
Will Smith's bankability failed to rub off on his son Jaden with After Earth, which some of the terrible reviews have linked to Scientology. The sci-fi film failed to appeal to younger moviegoers as 60% were over the age of 25.
Epic [EPIC] and Stark Trek: Into Darkness [TREK2] tied for fourth with $16.4 million. The Fox animated film dropped 51% from the holiday weekend to bring its total to $65.2 million.
The Hangover Part III [HNOV3] fell to sixth overall at $15.9 million, down 62% from its opening last week. The end of the comedy trilogy has tallied $88.1 million thus far.
