Collecting an estimated $36.4 million at the weekend box office, The Purge [PURGE] easily beat out the competition for first place. The low-budget thriller was produced for just $3 million before marketing. The R-rated home invasion thriller connected with young women, as the audience was 56% female and 56% under the age of 25. Word of mouth will be poor as moviegoers gave the The Purge a CinemaScore of C.
After two weeks in the front, Fast & Furious 6 [FAST6] dropped back to second with $19.8 million. The street racers have amassed $202.9 million.
Now You See Me [NYSME] finished third with $19.5 million, slipping just 33% from its opening last week. The magicians have already banked $61.4 million.
Despite the starpower, The Internship [NTERN] crashed in fourth place with $18.1 million. The Google movie brought out an older crowd that was 61% over the age of 25 evenly split between the sexes.
Rounding out th top five, Epic [EPIC] grossed $12.1 million to bring its total to $84.2 million.
After Earth [1THAE] tumbled 59% in its second weekend to $11.2 million to rank seventh overall. The Smiths have earned $46.6 million.
