After interviewing a shortlist of directors, Warner Bros. has decided to stay within the family and selected Zack Snyder [ZSNYD] to direct the next Superman [SUPR2]. The filmmaker previously worked with the studio on 300, Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole as well as the upcoming Suckerpunch. Snyder's dynamic, visual style should update the big blue Boy Scout with a gritty, contemporary edge missing in the 2006 restart Superman Returns. Overseeing the Superman makeover will be the team of Christopher Nolan as producer and David Goyer as screenwriter that successfully rebooted the Batman franchise. Brandon Routh or any of the cast from the Bryan Singer-directed film are unlikely to reprise their roles. Superman Returns disappointed fans by miscasting Lois Lane, focusing yet again on Lex Luthor as a bumbling real estate mogul, and introducing a child who was never in the comic mythology. Warner Bros. seems to have learned their lessons and hopefully gives the Man of Steel a worthy adversary to battle on screen.
The next Superman is being rushed into production as Warner Bros. is due to lose certain story rights to the heirs of Superman's creators. Superman could fly back into theaters by holiday 2012.
