With its trademark slow-motion shots of lifeguards running on the beach, the TV series Baywatch seemed to play best as an unintentional satire of the California beach life. The show reintroduced David Hasselhoff to TV and launched the careers of the likes of Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra. Paramount has hired Jeremy Garelick to rewrite their Baywatch [BAYWT] script as well as make his feature directorial debut. The first attempt to adapt the show focused on action and drama. Garelick, who co-scripted The Break-Up, will take a more comedic approach. "It felt like the template to do a movie that was similar to Stripes and Police Academy, the comedies I loved growing up," Garelick told Variety. His story will follow two unlikely lifeguard candidates trying to keep up with the model fit types seen on the show.
Hey, it could work. A Will Ferrell-type could certainly take over for The Hoff, who has already turned into a joke himself. Recent feature adaptations of TV series, Starsky & Hutch and Dukes of Hazzard, have found some success playing up the comedy over the action.
