John Frankenheimer began his filmmaking career in, of all places, the Air Force, as he made documentary shorts while in the service in the 1950s. He then went on to do TV directing work, including directing the much acclaimed Playhouse 90 series.
By the late 50s Frankenheimer had turned to feature film directing. 1962 was a particularly productive year for Frankenheimer as he directed both The Manchurian Candidate and The Bird Man of Alcatraz.
Frankenheimer's prolific career has continued to this day as he directed 1999's John Travolta vehicle The General's Daughter and 2000's Deception, a crime drama starring Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron.
