Description
Joe Johnston began his career as a special effects designer on Star Wars then became the visual effects art director for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Continuing working for Lucasfilm Ltd./Industrial Light & Magic, Johnston earned an Oscar for special visual effects on Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Johnston got his first directing assignment with 1989's Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. The success of that F/X laddened family film led to more similar features such as The Rocketeer, The Pagemaster, Jumanji, and Jurassic Park III.
