Description
Born in 1960 in Newark, New Jersey, Todd Solondz grew up very much the eccentric loner type, a character often depicted in his movies.He took an early interest in filmmaking and duly enrolled in NYU's prestigious film school. Based on the caliber of the student shorts he made, he was offered three-picture deals with a couple of Hollywood studios.
However, his debut film, 1989's Fear, Anxiety and Depression, was a disappointment.1995's Welcome to the Dollhouse was at times a humorous and painful look at one lonely outcast girl. The film won the 1996 Grand Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Solondz followed that up with 1998's Happiness, a dark comedy about a pedophile.
