Two R-rated, raunchy films outperformed expectations as Ted [TED] stuffed an estimated $54.1 million to top the weekend box office. The debut is the biggest ever for an original R-rated film, topping The Hangover's $45 million in 2009. The comedy about a foul-mouthed teddy bear attracted an audience that was 56% male.
The other R-rated breakout Magic Mike [MGCMK] pocketed $39.2 million to open in second place. The male strippers brought out an audience that was 73% female. Half of the weekend box office was frontloaded to Friday.
Last weekend's top film Brave [BRAVE] finished third with $34.0 million, off 49% from its opening weekend. The Pixar heroine has earned $131.7 million.
Madea's Witness Protection [MADWP] debuted fourth overall with $26.3 million, the fourth best in Tyler Perry's [TPERR] career. The diverse cast helped broaden the film beyond African-Americans that made up 72% of the audience.
Espanding into 854 theaters, Moonrise Kingdom [MNRSK] banked $4.9 million. Meanwhile, People Like Us [PLKUS] barely registered with moviegoers at $4.3 million.
