For kicks, I asked friends in the beer biz about this. They estimated the cost of four spots to be at least $10 million, probably closer

to $12 or $13 million (maybe with a couple of promo tags tossed in) depending on precise placement and when they were purchased.  They also wondered whether the report of four ads might be mistaken. 'That would be nuts,' was the response from one person with plenty of experience in big-dollar marketing.  'You can't even start to make the case for spending that money on that product.  No way.  Unless . . .  maybe they got caught with the inventory, say some spots that were bought for another movie that turned out couldn't be delivered on time, and then they couldn't make the exit deal in time?  But even then you would spread it over your other product, or do whatever it took to lay off some of this.  This sounds insane, it is hard to believe anyone could get away with this huge a miscalculation.  This would go to board level of just about any company on the planet, and the board would say no, then fire whoever brought it up.'

He had heard nothing about anyone trying to unload that many spots.  He also wasn't the only one who doubted this report. 'That kind of news would travel fast,' someone else said.

One guy said he had heard that a "Battleship" movie would be advertised.  He thought the idea of a movie based on a pencil-and-paper grid game had to be a joke, and that such a movie being on the Super Bowl was incredible.  Also said some other movies were being advertised but he couldn't remember which ones.  The people who advertise at that level seem to keep good tabs on what others are doing.

Bottom line:  Seems crazy.  Too much money.  No big-name stars.  No big-name director.  No popular book.  Jingoism is about it for this one, and it is probably formulaic even for jingoism.  I will believe it when I see that fourth spot.

$3.5 million for 30 sec during the game. Antibody Jan 10, 16:36

holly molly... 3.5? nuts... it'll better be worth it then... {nm} Oleg Max Jan 10, 16:38

They also are buying pregame and post game commercial spots as well {nm} dioneta Jan 10, 16:45

Editing that 30-second ad has probably become more important, financially, than creating the entire movie.{nm} DTXbro Jan 10, 16:28

seriously... talk about inflation... Oleg Max Jan 10, 16:41

2 are pre-game, 1 is post-game. {nm} Antibody Jan 10, 17:27

I didn't ask about that. That might take it down from "insane" to merely "stupid." {nm} DTXbro Jan 10, 18:06

It used to be that companies couldn't buy single spots, but had to buy in groups of 2 or 3. DTravel Jan 10, 18:20

This looks like a feature length advert for the military. Could this be funded by our tax dollars? {nm} bloopster Jan 10, 19:51

Sadly, that might be a fine question {nm} DTXbro Jan 11, 04:04

Act of Valor is an excellent picture.......should do well {nm} Latinman4747 Jan 10, 18:21
