Movies

I've tried to base my recent movie-going decisions on what I've learned from God's Word.

The one thing that sticks out for me is this verse: "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." The reason that I'm so hesitant to watch movies that don't really encourage me in my walk with God, is because visual images are so much more powerful (and in some cases, more graphic) than printed material like books, tracts etc. The reason that I feel guilty for watching some movies is when I know that the movie that I'm watching doesn't line up with the standard that God expects me to adhere to, and when I watch those movies, I'm thinking about things that don't agree with what God expects of me. I know that movies are a tricky subject to navigate, because on the one hand it's a very powerful tool to help others to learn about something (such as, for instance, the experience of suffering people during the Holocaust), but on the other hand it can also be used to tear people down emotionally. In my case, it's not wise of me to put myself into the position of watching a movie that I know goes directly against God's Word, and I also don't want to financially support a movie studio when its movie takes God's Name in vain. When I watch a movie, and then find out afterwards (or sometimes while watching the movie) that I've actually put myself into that position, that's what makes me feel guilty for watching it. If there was actually some way of editing out the blasphemy in movies, then I'd be more inclined to watch more of them. There's quite a few movies out there now that, if there wasn't blasphemy in, I would watch, because apart from that, I can't really see much else wrong with those movies. While I'm on the subject, does anyone know if there is a way to obtain movies like that? Is it legal to obtain a copy of a movie that has been edited by someone else other than the actual copyright owner of the movie, even if it's just simply to remove a few words from the dialogue?

Wrap: Gary Ross [GAROS] returning as director for Catching Fire [HGAM2] RazorHawk Jan 16, 15:45

According to that, Simon Beaufoy is already at work on the script. Neat! {nm} Paul2k Jan 16, 15:53

Paul, have you read the Hunger Games trilogy? What are they like? {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 16, 16:26

I have read them. I enjoyed them...for what is labeled "Young Adult" fiction, they're kinda dark and dystopic. Very engaging though. {nm} Paul2k Jan 16, 16:28

What do you mean by dark? How dark do they get? {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 16, 16:32

People die. {nm} TheWeekendWarrior Jan 16, 16:36

People die in the Hardy Boys Casefiles, that doesn't necessarily mean it's "dark" lol. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 16, 16:38

SPOILER! Kids die. {nm} TheWeekendWarrior Jan 16, 16:51

Very violent, immoral, and God/religion are not believed in {nm} islander Jan 16, 17:07

I don't recall seeing that in the Hardy Boys casefiles I read. Maybe you're thinking of that heathen, Nancy Drew. {nm} Paul2k Jan 16, 17:09

LOL. Maybe it was just that one Hardy Boys casefile that you never got to read... accountant_4_Jesus Jan 16, 17:15

Maybe we should just have two separate ratings for movies on here: accountant_4_Jesus Jan 16, 17:31

You shouldn't feel guilty about watching a movie. Watching a movie doesn't mean that you agree with or sympathize with any of the ideas Ruthian23 Jan 16, 21:45

Have a look at this interview with SSODE, the third entry on the page, "Transcribing Steven Soderbergh." second gary Jan 17, 07:26

What does having or not having religion have to do with being immoral, violent, or dark? SPOILER INSIDE DTXbro Jan 16, 19:01

Post was just for acct. A Godless society may be a theme that could affect his interest {nm} islander Jan 16, 19:15

To avoid spoilers, let's just say if the films were a faithful adaptation of the books, they'd be rated R no question. {nm} stevie1der328 Jan 16, 17:23

Ok, thanks for letting me know that. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 16, 17:24

Nowhere near as dark as Battle Royale... :) {nm} skamanfu Jan 16, 16:57

Speaking of which, they're releasing Battle Royale I and II stateside on blu-ray March 20th, just in time for The Hunger Games. {nm} Jelly Jan 16, 17:20

Wasn't there supposed to be a 3D theatrical release? {nm} islander Jan 16, 17:23

Not sure about the 3D theatrical release, but I did catch a screening recently at Cinefamily here in LA (only in 2D) skamanfu Jan 16, 17:45

there's no demand for the 3d release {nm} Moviesnob Jan 16, 19:03

The Harry Potter books were dark as well. Especially the later books. mrbeankc Jan 16, 20:15
